National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, has appealed to world leaders to intervene and put an end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

He urged both parties to seek an amicable solution and respect human rights in their pursuit of peace.

Speaking on Sunday at St Francis of Assisi, Chwele Sub-Parish Catholic Church in Kabuchai constituency, where he presided over a fundraising event for a church construction project, the Speaker expressed concerns about the potential global impact of the war, including its effect on Kenya’s cost of living.

“As a leader and a former Kenyan Foreign Affairs minister, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. We call upon the combatants to lay down their arms, engage in dialogue within the framework of international multilateral bodies like the United Nations, and work towards global peace,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker cautioned that the Hamas-Israel war is a ticking time bomb that could spread to other parts of the world, with potential repercussions for Kenya and beyond, including the rise of other organised groups causing havoc. He also reassured the country that there is progress in the ongoing bipartisan talks at the Bomas.

He stated his readiness to receive the report in Parliament and proceed according to the decisions reached by Members of Parliament.

Addressing the upcoming national examinations, the Speaker called for support for all candidates and urged stakeholders to ensure fairness during the assessment process, allowing deserving students to receive their well-earned results. The Speaker also residents that the government had plans to construct a modern referral hospital in the Sichei area to enhance healthcare services and provide educational opportunities for institutions like Kibabii University, as well as create job opportunities.

He was accompanied by the Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, area MP Majimbo Kalasinga, local MCAs, and leaders from the county government.

Meanwhile, the Iteso community in Busia, led by Teso North MP Oku Kaunya, has reached out to Wetang’ula, to assist them in the establishment of a county of their own.
