Striking health workers dare Nyong’o to sack them
Kisumu County health workers have dared governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to sack them maintaining that the ongoing strike will continue until all their demands are met.
They also demanded that the governor take action against officials believed to have misappropriated funds meant for their promotion.
According to union officials, some Sh250 million was allocated in the budget for their members’ promotions and an additional Sh38 million in supplementary budget but the money was yet to be paid out.
In a press briefing yesterday, Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun), Kisumu branch secretary Maurice Opetu, said no amount of threats will make them call off the strike which is in its second week.
Promotions demand
Nyong’o had threatened to sack the striking workers if they failed to return to work by Friday last week.
They are demanding promotions, redeployment, end of late payment of salaries and payment of Covid-19 allowances.
The strike has left health services in the county hospitals paralysed.
Opetu accused Nyong’o of refusing to address their grievances despite previous successful negotiations on their implementation.
