Students safety comes first, Catholic schools told

Catholic-sponsored learning institutions have been directed to take seriously the safety of learners while in school and on educational trips.

Commission for Education and Religious Education chair Bishop Paul Njiru (pictured) yesterday said it is important to implement comprehensive measures to safeguard learners from harm including accidents and incidents that may occur during school activities.

“By prioritising safety measures schools can create an environment where children can learn and thrive with confidence knowing their wellbeing is always a top priority,” he said.

He made the remarks at the start of the three-day day Catholic Private Educational Institutions Association – Kenya conference, being held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

The conference is being attended by Catholic schools principals across the country and was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, Hurbetus Matheus Maria van Megan.

When organising educational trips, Njiru said seeking parental consent is crucial.

“Parental consent ensures they are informed about the nature of the trip, potential risks involved and emergency procedures,” he added.
