Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has urged Kenyans to buy locally made goods to boost local firms.

He said it’s ridiculous for Kenya to continue importing many products including matchboxes and toothpicks, which he noted can be made locally.

Speaking during a ceremony to hand over a new Tractor to Olendu Elders Cooperative Society in Uasin Gishu county at the weekend, he said the only way to create jobs is by ensuring local innovators are supported.

The society owns a saw mill, wood mizer, a tree nursery and an agrovet situated in Kesses sub-county.

He urged the youth to join the cooperative movement to save for  a rainy day and get loans to boost their businesses.

“It has come to our notice that majority of our youth have information, skills and technology but it is still difficult for them to use the knowledge they have gained to empower themselves because they are impatient and only prefer white collar jobs,” he noted.

He lauded the members of the society for the progress they have made since they got their first loan of Sh2 million from the county government in 2016.

He also urged them to venture into agricultural activities that are more profitable.

County Executive in charge of Cooperatives Esther Mutai urged the youth to take advantage of the enterprise fund.
