Talanta, Bomet atop NSL table
As the second round of action in the Betika National Super League wound up at the weekend, two teams showed promise despite the season being in its nascent stage.
FC Talanta posted their second straight win after a 3-0 demolition of visiting Chemelil Sugar at Ruaraka Stadium Saturday.
Goals from Maurice Odipo, Juma Amadi and Angal Oporia were enough to give the Nairobi-based three points after their 2-1 win on match day one against Modern Coast Rangers away.
As it stands, Ken Kenyatta’s charges deservedly lead the standings on six points as they seek a huge mark.
The Sugar Men who were relegated from the top tier last season had a difficult outing against a well grounded Talanta despite their 1-0 win against Shabana last weekend.
“We will take it a game at a time and not get overly carried away. So far, it is working for us but we cannot say we are a finished product yet,” said Kenyatta whose final engagement was early last season with the now-defunct Ushuru FC.
Newcomers Silibwet Leons are already making a name for themselves after a 2-1 win a way to Murang’a Seal in an entertaining match played at St Sebastian Park, Murang’a.
Only last week on their debut, the South Rift side stunned Sony Sugar 3-2 in Bomet grounds.
Seal under David Mahira is yet to pick full points in the campaign after drawing 1-1 with Kibera Black Stars last week.
Sony Sugar, meanwhile, beat Vihiga Bullets 2-1 at Awendo Green Stadium for their first points in the championship.
Coach Mahira who lost 19 players in the off-season still believes his team is a work in progress: “It is no harm yet because the season is still young.
We have a green squad with new faces so we will continue guiding them,” he stated.
Meanwhile ,Fortune Sacco, who got a walkover last weekend after their opponents failed to appear, had to battle hard to get full points against Modern Coast Rangers at their home base of Kianyaga Stadium in Kerugoya.
At Bukhungu, the battle of newbies ended in a scintillating 2-2 draw between hosts Soy United and visiting Mwatate FC.
Soy who also started the season with similar results against Nairobi Stima opened the scores through live wire Kingsley Olaninyi but Mwatate came strongly after the goal to score twice, but Olaninyi who also scored last weekend against Stima, came back to level matters with a second goal to take his tally to three in two matches.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Mully Children’s Foundation got a baptism of fire after a 3-0 drubbing by Kenya Police through goals from Clinton Kinanga, Peter Kariuki and Samuel Githire.
In another enthralling clash at Gusii Stadium, Shabana was forced to a second consecutive draw of the season after their 2-2 draw with Mt Kenya United.
