The entry of renowned thespian Teddy Mutu in the Nairobi senatorial contest is likely to complicate Nominated MP Maina Kamanda’s ambitions.
Already, the veteran city politician has announced his intentions to run for the seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Mutu was cast as Kisu in the popular television Kiswahili soap opera, Tausi, which aired on KBC TV in the early 90’s.

He is making a third stab in the city’s exciting political scene, exuding confidence that this time round he will put up a fierce fight after rectifying some of his missteps.

“In 2017, I vied for the Huruma Ward seat on Jubilee ticket but did not make it,” he told People Daily.

In 2018, he once again sought Nairobi County Assembly’s 85 elected Ward Rep’ blessings for the Speaker’s position. But again, it was about making a political statement of his undying ambitions.

“This time round with the backing of more than 70 per cent of the MCAs and their nominated counterparts from the national political divide, I am confident I will win it,” he said.

Major challenge

Mutu further says that over 200 aspirants seeking Assembly seats in the city under the Jubilee ticket have also pledged to support his bid, noting that this gives him an edge over other candidates seeking the party’s nomination.

“I am confident I will trounce those seeking Jubilee party’s flag for the Nairobi senatorial seat,” he said.

But owing to his experience and political connections, Kamanda will still pose a major challenge for the media personality turned politician.
Mutu is the chairman of Eastlands Garbage Collectors, and will face Kamanda in primaries.

“My vision is to bring those resources to the youth at the grassroot level,” he said.
