Thika High School in Thika Sub-County, Kiambu County has reclaimed its lost glory by registering an impressive performance in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

The institution that registered a mean score of 7.93, an improvement from 7.61 in the previous year had 351 candidates out of the 450 who sat for the 2023 examinations qualify to join university.

According to the senior principal Julius Muraya, four candidates scored A plain, 28 got A minus, 69 boys scored B plus, 79 attained B plain, 87 got B minus, 84 attained C plus, 51 got C plain, 33 students got C minus, 11 got D plus while four candidates scored D plain.

Hard work

Speaking during celebrations at the school, Muraya attributed the outstanding performance to hard work and commitment by both the candidates and the teaching staff.

“The hard work of our boys and the commitment made by teachers in this school has finally paid off. The institution has managed to take 351 candidates straight to the university. This is the highest number the institution has posted in a few years,” said Muraya.

Muraya noted that the school, which was established in 1956 by the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Africa (PCEA), has been an academic giant despite facing turbulence through the years. He noted that the school has produced high ranking personalities, individuals of substance and people who hold high offices in diverse fields citing the current Public Service Cabinet Secretary and former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.

The school, he said, commits to providing access to quality education adding that the institution has recently experienced a surge in students’ population.

He however revealed that the school is grappling with some challenges including inadequate infrastructure to conveniently handle the population calling on the Government to establish more schools in the region to ease the congestion.

In the ongoing enrolment, the principal stated that the institution is set to admit some 500 form ones.
Top performers at the school led by Clinton Mugama who scored a straight A of 83 points hailed the support by his teachers and moral support from his parents as the force behind his performance.
