Three more Kenyans die of Covid-19
Three Kenyans succumbed to Covid-19 yesterday as the country recorded 129 new cases after testing 4,797 samples in the last 24 hours.
The country has sustained a relatively low Covid-19 infection since late last year, a below five per cent transmission, though experts warn against dropping the guard.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Health yesterday, Nairobi County registered most of the new infections with 87 cases followed by Uasin Gishu (12), Kiambu (11), Machakos (four) and Kisumu (three).
Isiolo, Kajiado and Laikipia followed with two cases each while Bungoma, Kericho, Kilifi, Meru, Mombasa and Nyamira each had one new case.
Among the new infections are 69 male and 60 female, the youngest is one-year-old and the oldest 81.
The new infections raise the total number of tested cases since the first infection in March 2020 to 1,214,742.
The CS Kagwe further reported that 59 patients have recovered, 34 from home-based care programme and 25 at various health facilities raising total recoveries to 84,361.
As of Sunday, Kagwe said 391 Covid-19 patients had been hospitalised countrywide while 1,378 were being treated at home.
Some 37 were in intensive care units, 15 of them on ventilatory support, 18 on supplemental oxygen and four under observation.
Another 13 patients were separately on supplemental oxygen, all of them in general wards.
Government has announced plans to vaccinate 16 million people by the end of the year to suppress the virus with vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Johnson and Johnson.
Already, Covax programme has projected that Kenya will receive close to 4.1 million doses of the AstraZeneca, and Pfizer vaccine.
In phase two of the vaccination, which is set to kick off in July and end in June 2022, 9.7 million Kenyans will be vaccinated.
The government said it will target mostly people aged above 50 and those above 18, but who have underlying conditions.
