Tokyo Olympics: Uhuru awards Kenyan athletes after public outcry
President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally awarded Kenyan athletes who participated in the just concluded Tokyo Olympics.
The athletes, who jetted into the country to a low key reception last week, have been given cash awards by the President.
"President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday received representatives of the triumphant Kenyan contingent to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and announced cash rewards of Shs 1 million, 750,000 and 500,000 for Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists respectively," State House said in a statement.
All other athletes who participated and did not win any medal have not been forgotten as well.
"The Head of State further announced a uniform token of Shs 200,000 for all athletes and officials, including the Paralympics team, participating in delayed Summer Games," the statement read in part.
It added: "The President thanked the Olympians for their outstanding performances that saw Kenya top the African medal chart, and challenged the sporting fraternity to ensure the country continues to excel on the global stage."
Last week, Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment in the manner in which the athletes were received at the airport when they jetted back from Tokyo.
Kenyan won 10 medals in the Olympics that include four gold, four silver and two bronze.
Kenya topped Africa and became position 19 globally in the Tokyo Olympics.
