Trial of suspects in NYS graft case set for March 11
The hearing of a case in which seven former bank managers are facing charges in relation to the Sh1.6 billion National Youth Service (NYS) scandal will now be heard on March 11.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi fixed the hearing after the case stalled in May 2019 after Family Bank entered into a plea bargaining agreement with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.
The matter was later scheduled for hearing on February 14, 2020 but it could not proceed following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the case, former CEO Peter Munyiri, Robert Nyaga, Charles Thiongo, Raphael Ndunda, Nancy Njambi, Meldon Onyango and Josephine Wairimu are charged with failure to report significant transactions carried out by NYS season one chief suspect Josephine Kabura Irungu’s using three bank accounts held at the bank.
Bank was discharged from the case on May 1, 2019 after the court fined it Sh64.5 million after it pleaded guilty to six counts of failing to report suspicious transactions involving Sh1.6 billion made by NYS prime suspect Kabura.
Andayi fined the bank after it pleaded to the charges through its representative John Muchiri Kingo’ri.
Accused have denied the charges and were each released on a Sh300,000 cash bail or Sh1 million bond.
