Uganda has allowed Kenyan truck drivers to enter their territory using Covid-19 certificates for only 72 hours.

An official of the government, Henry Mulembezi, said the truck drivers would start using their certificates when travelling to Great Lakes Region States instead of acquiring other certificates in Uganda.

Uganda had barred the drivers from entering into the country through Malaba border before paying Sh3,600 to acquire another Covid certificate on Ugandan side.

Chairman of truck drivers Juma Masinde protested the decision that recognised the certificates’ validity for only 72 hours.

Masinde urged Uganda to rescind the decision, saying the 72 hours will lapse even before some of them arrive to their destination.

“Ugandan government should rescind its decision because the 72 hours given will expire before some drivers arrive to their destination,” said Masinde.

Masinde said it is regrettable that it is only in Uganda where Kenyan truck drivers are being harassed as compared to other countries where they use their Covid-19 certificates without any hiccups.

He also accused Ugandan authorities of harassing the truck drivers.
