TSC asked to stop discriminating against teachers
The National Assembly committee on education yesterday directed the teachers’ employer to stop discriminating against tutors based on their affiliation.
The Committee, chaired by Florence Mutua, directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should immediately pay teachers who were left out in promotions during the implementation of the third and fourth phases of 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Mutua also directed that TSC restores the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) register as it was in June 2019 and stops discriminating against Knut members to ensure there is cordial working relationship.
Compromise matters
“The parties should cease hostility and compromise matters in court. The Committee directs that all teachers be paid their third and fourth CBA benefits not withstanding their union affiliation because all the monies for teachers salary increment was budgeted for and approved by parliament” Mutua directed.
TSC and Knut are to engage to have Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) captured in the Code of Regulations for teachers through amendments and presented to Parliament for approval.
The committee directed TSC to develop guidelines on Teacher Professional Development (TPD) and submit them to Parliament for approval.
The committee however referred the issue of Knut’s agency fee to Labour CS, Simon Chelugui for guidance on the way forward but directed TSC to release the monies it has been holding since last year.
During the meeting held yesterday in Parliament gave TSC, Knut and Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) discuss labour relations between themselves.
