Two police officers attached to Obama police post in Kayole were on Friday morning shot dead and their firearms stolen.

Nairobi county police commander Philip Ndolo said the attackers stole an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition and a Jericho pistol during the 4am attack.

The identity and motive of the attackers were not immediately established, but a neighbour reported that she heard the two groups argue for about three minutes before five gunshots were heard.

The slain officers, who were on duty within Mwengenye area, had challenged the other party to surrender and identified themselves as police officers but the other group declined, claiming that they were also police officers.

After the brief argument, they were shot dead.

The attackers stole their firearms, pocket phones, mobile phones and other personal effects.

Nairobi police boss Ndolo, his DCI counterpart Benard Nyakwaka and the head of Flying Squad Musa Yego visited the scene Friday morning and launched investigations.

The deceased officers have been identified as Police Constables Joel Chesire and Albert Abeere.

Constable Chesire was shot on the head while Constable Abeere was shot on the neck.

Detectives collected five spent cartridges from the scene which were later forwarded for ballistic examination.
