Uhuru commissions construction of police leadership academy
National Police Service (NPS) yesterday launched the construction of a Police Leadership Academy in Ngong for training of senior officers.
Sh1 billion project comprising 210 housing units, and funded by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), is expected to be completed by January next year, 2022.
The academy will have lecture rooms, a police station, two-bedroom apartments, and recreational facilities will train at least 200 senior officers at any given time with the CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge saying the 104 officers attached to CBK -will be given priority.
President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday commissioned the construction, saying it was his initiative.
“All these are aimed to make police more efficient and responsive,” he said.
He said he was excited to learn the construction will take a year to complete adding that he will soon commission the Forensic Laboratory at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, to enhance police capacity in tackling the ever evolving crime.
The President said the multi-agency co-operation was working well and had helped detect and resolve some of the complex cases.
Uhuru who had earlier said he did not want to engage in politics warned that there was no leadership vacuum in his administration.
He said some people were saying he was on his way out and there was ‘nothing he could do’.
He instead warned unnamed persons that he was still in charge of the country.
“Let me remind them that even if I am going, I still have some days to roar like a lion. There is no vacancy,” the President said.
The launch was attended by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, his Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and his two deputies and the DCI boss George Kinoti.
