Uhuru convenes summit to discuss Covid-19 surge
President Uhuru Kenyatta has called an Extraordinary Summit to deliberate on the country’s coronavirus situation in the wake of a surge in new confirmed cases and deaths.
In a press statement, State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena said that President Kenyatta will chair the Sixth Extraordinary Session of the national and county governments next Wednesday.
“The extraordinary session has been convened in the light of the resurgence of Covid-19 infections across the nation as exhibited by the fact that Kenya has recorded its highest number monthly fatalities in the October,” Dena said.
National caseload
The statement came as the country reported 1,018 new coronavirus cases yesterday, pushing the national caseload to 51,851.
In a statement detailing the worsening coronavirus situation in the country, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said 16 more patients had succumbed to the disease bringing the death toll to 950.
It means that this month alone, the country has witnessed highest number of infections in a day and the second highest number of fatalities in a single day.
In the statement from State House, Dena said that next Wednesday’s session which will comprise the Council of Governors (COG) and the country’s top health experts will review the containment measures and the impact of easing restrictions that were in place.
The President calls on all Kenyans to continue applying simple yet highly effective individual and collective measures that are our nation’s best weapon against Covid-19, she said.
