President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday hinted that controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna is welcome to come back into the country following his dramatic deportation last year.

Speaking in Kandara, Murang'a County during the funeral service of the late Charles Rubia, Uhuru said there is freedom of expression in Kenya and no one has been restrained from expressing their opinion.

“I have heard that some people are planning to fly into the country. Let them come but they should use their freedom to spread peace and help fight corruption,” he said.

In a widely shared tweet earlier this month, Miguna announced his return and tagged Chief Justice David Maraga, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

“Court orders must be obeyed. Ensure compliance with Justice Mwita’s orders of December 14, 2018,” he tweeted.

His anticipated January 7 return will be his third attempt to come back to the country after the government accused him of being in Kenya illegally claiming he had renounced his Kenyan citizenship when acquiring a Canadian passport.

Miguna was first deported in February 2018 over his role in the mock swearing-in of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on January 30, 2018. The following month, he unsuccessfully attempted to return to Kenya but was denied entry at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In April, Miguna announced he would be coming back but it never came to be.
