Uhuru lifts cessation of movement into and out of ‘disease infected’ counties

President Uhuru Kenyatta has on May 1, lifted the cessation of movement into and out of five counties; Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kajiado and Machakos with effect from midnight on May 1, 2021.

Speaking during the celebration of Labour Day at the State House, the president also announced that curfew hours will now run between 10pm and 4am across the country. Curfew hours had been running between 8pm and 4am in the Disease Infested Zone (DIZ) since March 27.

“With regard to the Zoned Area comprising of the counties of Nairobi, Machakos, Kiambu, Kajiado and Nakuru, it is directed that the cessation of movement into and out of the Zoned area be and is hereby lifted;

“That the hours of curfew in the Zoned Area  are revised to commence at 10:00pm and end at 4:00am, with effect from mid-night on this 1st day of May, 2021, until otherwise directed,” president’s speech read in part.

He also gave greenlight to bar owners directing that all bars in the country will now operate until 7pm.

Churches and mosques and Restaurants and eateries are the biggest beneficiaries as their operations return.

Resumption of sporting activities are to be guided by Ministry of Sports as all learning institutions re-open in accordance with Ministry of Education calendar.

Prohibition against political gatherings has however been extended.

The president noted that the decision to ease the COVID-19 containment measures is advised by the reduction of the country’s caseload.
