Uncertainty looms over whether Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be allowed to enter Nairobi’s central business district (CBD) today or not.

In September, Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Mohammed Badi had told Parliament that all matatus plying major routes to the CBD will not access the city centre starting December 1.

Badi told the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security that land has already been acquired and construction work started on new bus termini.

Initially, NMS had targeted the land where Neno Evangelism Church is built, but a court process forced it to look for an alternative site.

Speaking to People Daily, NMS Director in-charge of Transport Engineer Michael Ochieng said they were yet to decide on the exact date when PSVs will be barred from accessing the CBD.

“We have a plan to decongest the city but we are yet to come up with an exact date.

Things will be done in phases in terms of which termini are ready and which matatus will occupy. For now treat the issue of December 1,  as just rumors,” he said.
