University of Nairobi theology lecturer Gilbert Ogutu was yesterday found dead at his home in Wambasa village,  Bondo sub-county.

The body of the don, who was an Associate Professor of Church History at the University, was discovered by his worker at 9am hanging from a rope in his bedroom, in what is suspected to be suicide.

Siaya Police Commandant Francis Kooli confirmed the incident and said investigations into the matter had  been launched.

“He did not leave any suicide note behind, though we have launched investigations into the matter,” said Kooli.

Central Yimbo location chief Gordon Opundo said the professor had  travelled to his rural home from Nairobi on Friday to attend a burial ceremony.

“We are shocked to learn of  the death of the professor who had gone  home to bury his brother,” said Opundo.

He said  Ogutu had been accompanied by his second wife but the latter left for Kisumu on Saturday  evening.

Ogutu, a former secretary of the Luo Council of Elders , was instrumental in the Kanu-NDP merger in the mid 1990s.

According to his employee who did not want to be named, the don did not seem to be having any problem the day before he died.

“We have not yet come to terms with the death of professor whom we saw retiring to bed after the burial ceremony,” he said.
