Women's rights advocacy organisations have called on government institutions to uphold gender parity while making appointments.

They are concerned that some agencies were still overlooking the two-thirds gender rule in appointing leaders, especially at the county level.

Addressing the press in Kisumu on Wednesday, the organisations, led by UN Women, told governors to uphold the law that advocates for gender parity in appointments.

Mildred Nzau, a director at UN Women, said women will continue to push for their constitutional rights. Nzau said her organisation is keen on strengthening the capacity of institutions and women leaders to contribute to the development of the country.

She reiterated that they want women accorded equal opportunity in leadership positions by the county and national administrations.

“It is our commitment as UN women to ensure that even as we move forward in the post-election period gender equality remains a key agenda on the table. Our aim is to see the women occupy the positions provided for them in law without pulling back,” Nzau said.

Nzau was flanked by Kenya Female Advisory Organisation Executive Director Easter Okech and Econet Africa Programme Manager Mercy Nyambala, when they earlier met Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili, whom they discussed with the issues of affirmative action. Owili assured them that they will soon name more women into the county Executive committee.
