The United States has pledged Ksh130 million to the Kenya Red Cross to support their efforts in aiding communities affected by the recent floods in the country.

The announcement was made by US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, during a visit to flood-affected areas in Mathare.

Flood impacted areas

Ambassador Whitman visited Mradi and Mathare 4A, some of the neighborhoods most severely impacted by the recent flooding, where she met with affected families and toured one of the evacuation camps set up by the Kenya Red Cross, which houses 252 families.

Joined by Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Ahmed Idris, Ambassador Whitman said that the funding aims to support the agency's critical work in flood-hit regions and expressed solidarity with the families who have suffered loss and displacement.

"Today, the U.S. announced Ksh130 million in new assistance to support Kenya Red Cross and its work with communities affected by recent flooding. My heart goes out to all families impacted by the recent devastation," Ambassador Whitman said in a statement on her X (formerly Twitter) account.

The Kenya Red Cross plans to use the funds to bolster its humanitarian response in the affected communities.

The organization also extended gratitude to the American people and USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance for their ongoing commitment to disaster relief.

"With the new funding announced by the Ambassador, the Kenya Red Cross will increase its humanitarian support to communities adversely affected by the floods. We are grateful to the American people through USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, who have provided invaluable support for temporary shelter, settlement needs, and WASH non-food items, in addition to their normal emergency programming," Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.
