USAid donates medical equipment to aid coronavirus war
Mombasa county has received a major boost after the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAid), donated medical equipment worth Sh40 million to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
The equipment include, 14 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators and a Toyota Land cruiser to be deployed at the Coast General Teaching and Referral hospital (CPGH ) to assist Covid-19 patients admitted in critical conditions.
USAid Kenya and East Africa mission director, Mark Meassick said the donation is part of a request by President Uhuru Kenyatta to the United States president Donald Trump while he was on a tour to the United States.
“The ventilators, produced in the United States, reflect leading-edge and in-demand technology,” said Meassick, yesterday.
Governor Hassan Joho,who attended the official unveiling through a video conference, reiterated on the need for Mombasa residents to adhere to Covid-19 regulations.
“The county is experiencing a surge of Covid-19 cases and everyone has a responsibility to follow all guidelines.
The new ventilators are a significant boost to the war against Covid-19 in Mombasa and particularly to those in critical conditions,” said Joho.
CPGH chief executive Iqbal Khandwala said the hospital had purchased eight ventilators and the additional 14 will go a long way in fighting Covid-19.
“It’s a big boost for the hospital, they have come at the right time when the hospital is experiencing a surge of patients in critical condition,” he said.
