Veteran lawyer who has led local giants for 12 years, makes U-turn
Long serving Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has declared his intention to seek another term at the helm of the local league giants when club elections are held on August 8.
Rachier who has been Gor’s chairman for 12 years now, is already carrying the record of the longest serving chairman of the club and should he win next month’s polls that would guarantee him a term of four years, then he would have served the club for 16 years when he leaves.
So far, the polls have attracted several aspirants in the four elective positions, sources have told People Sport that intensive lobbying has already begun, with aspirants meeting voters frequently as they sale their agendas.
At least two other candidates have indicated interest in the chairmanship position and are confident of ending Rachier’s tenure at the club.
In what has built interest over the years after claims that the 71-year-old veteran lawyer had outlived his usefulness, analysts are now warning that the polls that will be held virtually will make or break the club profile.
However, Rachier who credits his 12-year tenure in office as one of significant success, has promised to not only defend his position but also drive the 52-year-old club to greater heights. “Some people believe I have overstayed but I disagree with that notion.
I had indicated sometime last year that I would relinquish my position but I have noted that nobody is actually ready to take over the mantle.
This was a ship that was sinking and as the captain it was and remains my responsibility to keep it afloat,” Rachier said in an interview with a local radio station.
He added: “My office has achieved a lot under difficult circumstances and I know with another term I can do better for this great club.
I hear there are people who want this seat and I welcome them because I do not own it, I am just a servant.
Once the Electoral Board clears them after satisfying all conditions, then let us meet at the ballot. I am confident enough.”
A section of K’Ogalo faithfuls has expressed displeasure with the club and called for change.
Already word is that current second vice chairman Engineer George Ongudi who is in the transport business has showed intentions for going for the top position.
Strategy and Human Resource Consultant cum Businessman Eliud Owalo has also been tipped to go for the post, however, he denied the claims yesterday.
Current Organising Secretary Judith Nyangi is angling for the treasurer position while Sam Ochola, a Media guru who owns Dala FM and Lolwe TV in Kisumu is eyeing the Secretary General position.
The outspoken Nyangi has, however, taken issue with the office in regards to attempting to lock out contestants with draconian rules.
“Gor Mahia is a community club and the qualifications demand of a degree certificate for one to be cleared for elections sounds like a joke.
Such qualifications should only be asked for people who want to be employed by the club like the CEO and Finance Manager. We do not need all these qualifications to lead Gor.
