Waluke barred from travelling to US over criminal cases
Sirisia Member of Parliament John Waluke has been barred from leaving Kenya for the United States of America.
Waluke was told by the court through Justice Esther Maina that he was a convict and cannot be allowed to travel outside the country for any reason whatsoever.
The MP had moved to court seeking to be given his passport so as he could head to the US on parliamentary duties.
“You are a convict and you cannot leave Kenya,” Justice Maina told Waluke.
Waluke’s passport was confiscated from him by an Anti-Corruption Court after he was accused of stealing Sh297 million from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
He was charged alongside his business partner Grace Wakhungu.
In a ruling made last year, a trial court imposed a combined fine of Sh2 billion.
The court ruled that in default, Wakhungu was handed a 39-year sentence while the MP was slapped with a 34-year sentence.
The duo; Waluke and Wakhungu were once jailed due to the case but in September 2020, the High Court in Nairobi granted the convicts bond pending the hearing and determination of their appeal.
This saw Wakhungu ordered to pay Sh20 million cash bail or an alternative Sh30 million bond while Waluke was released on a Sh10 million cash bail or an alternative Sh20 million bond.
They were also asked that they should not leave the country without the court’s permission.
Wakhungu and Waluke were asked to be reporting to the High Court’s deputy register once a month.
