We have no crisis in city government, MCAs insist
The Nairobi County Government is running smoothly despite the arrest and arraignment of Governor Mike Sonko, a group of MCAs said yesterday.
At a press conference, the MCAs said the County Executive Committee, working with the Assembly, was in control of affairs at the City Hall contrary to concerns that the governor’s arrest could lead to a leadership crisis.
Leader of Majority Charles Thuo called on residents of Nairobi to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
“We are asking Nairobians to be calm and maintain peace until his fate is determined by the courts.
The law is clear that a person is innocent until proven guilty,” said Thuo who was accompanied by 18 MCAs drawn from Jubilee and ODM parties.
Sources at City Hall said a group of County Executive Committee members, county secretaries and MCAs visited the governor who was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday.
The governor is expected back in court this morning for his bail application ruling.
No deputy
There were fears that Sonko’s supporters might stage protests when he was arraigned on Monday.
Police took precautionary measures by sealing off the court building and diverting traffic.
Opinion is divided on what should happen if Sonko, who faces 19 corruption-related charges, is barred from accessing his office, considering he does not have a deputy to serve in acting capacity.
Experts have ruled out County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi taking over in acting capacity because suspension of a governor by a court does not create a vacancy in that office.
There are also reports that some leaders are plotting impeachment of the governor to force a by-election.
