Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko yesterday appealed to casual workers to be patient and assured them his administration will clear their three-month wage arrears.

Sonko said the county owes the employees arrears of Sh62 million to be paid once the Supplementary Budget is passed by the County Assembly.

Through his spokesman and political advisor Ben Mulwa, Sonko dismissed claims that they are owed nine months of unpaid salaries.

Brief demo

Close to 2,000 casual workers made the claims yesterday at Soweto Social Hall in Kayole where they held a brief demonstration before police dispersed them.

The Governor said he owes the workers monies that accrued between September, October and November 2019 when they worked, before the Nairobi Beautification programme was cancelled.

“According to the contractual agreement we are going to pay each worker an estimated Sh653 per day for five days.

And this money will only be paid once the Supplementary Budget is passed by the County Assembly,” the Governor said in a statement delivered on his behalf by Mulwa.
