The dispute over a multi-billion-shilling land in Uasin-Gishu county involving the family of the late retired President Daniel arap Moi (right) and a late paramount chief has taken another twist with the chief’s family now demanding Sh3 billion as compensation from the former president’s family for grabbing their land.

Chelugui’s widow, Susan Chelugui, 100, is now demanding for justice to be served on them.“My age is now advanced and my hope is to see justice served to my family before I leave this world. I’ve been silent since the court ruling but I have decided to break my silence,” said the widow.

This follows a court ruling in 2019 in favour of the family of the late Noah Kipng’eny Chelugui.

The late retired President Moi and Rai Plywood (K) Limited had been listed as appellants in the case.

Chelugui and her children Susan Cheburet Chelugui and Daniel Chelugui, the late Chelugui, Uasin-Gishu District land registrar, the registrar of titles and the National Land Commission had been listed as respondents in the case at the court of Appeal in Kisumu. Through their lawyers, the late retired president Moi and Rai Plywood (K) Limited moved to Court of Appeal to challenge a court in Eldoret on May 8, 2019 where Justice J Ombwayo found that the acquisition of the 53-acre land by the late President Moi was unconstitutional, irregular and unprocedural.

Justice Ombwayo had ordered Plywood (K) Limited and Moi to pay Chelugui’s family Sh1.7 billion as compensation for the land illegally registered in their names from a petition filed in 2014.
