Kisumu County Department of Health has awarded 19 women groups cheques funding grants worth Sh855, 000 funded through the Tuberculosis (TB) Reach programme in the area.

Through the initiative, women from beach areas across five sub-counties in Kisumu were trained on early TB case detection, prevention, community education and sensitisation.

Speaking during the cheque awarding ceremony, the Ag County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Health Dr Gregory Ganda said the money would help them carry out their activities even as they sensitised and championed for the TB-free community in the fishing areas.

He said the women had been equipped with knowledge and skills on the detection, maintenance and referrals of TB symptoms and cases through community health volunteers at the sub-county levels.

“We did the training, but after research, we found out that it will be hard to engage these groups without financial support as most of them are financially unstable. The money will help the groups to boost and venture into businesses,” he explained.
