Tanzania has succeeded in eliminating all locusts that invaded the country from neighboring Kenya, a cabinet minister said on Tuesday.

The Minister for Agriculture, Adolf Mkenda, said swarms of locusts that invaded northern districts of the country starting from Feb. 19 had been eliminated.

The invasion of the locusts sent farmers panicking but the minister said the locusts were eliminated before they damaged farm crops.

"What we are doing now is to monitor if there are places that they used as breeding sites," said Mkenda.

Last week, Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa commended efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture in fighting off the locusts.

Majaliwa also paid tribute to the Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa and the International Red Locust Control Organization for Central and Southern Africa for their support in fighting the locusts.
