Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi on Monday was arrested by police for holding an illegal protest in the capital Kampala.

Luke Owoyesigire, Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that Kyagulanyi and nine other persons were arrested at the Constitutional Square.

"He was arrested today (Monday) as he was approaching City Square and nine other people. We are investigating allegations of holding an illegal procession and inciting violence," said Owoyesigire.

"They are currently being detained at CPS (Central Police Station). They will appear in court. We have a right to hold them for 48 hours," he said.

Kyagulanyi's National Unity Platform party said in a statement that the pop star turned politician was arrested as he led a peaceful protest over the continued abduction and illegal detention of his supporters.

Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, came second to incumbent president Yoweri Museveni in the Jan. 14 polls. Museveni won the elections by 58.64 percent of the votes and Kyagulanyi got 34.83 percent.

Museveni in a televised address on Sunday said there were opposition politicians who are trying to frustrate his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May.
