Zetech partners with Tharaka Nithi, Partners For Care to empower youth, PLWDs

Zetech University has partnered with the County Government of Tharaka Nithi and Partners For care to empower youth, women and People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).

Through this partnership, the institution and NGO have been able to donate mobility carts and eco-friendly water backpacks.

Speaking after a consultative meeting with the Governor and Partners for Care, Zetech University Vice-Chancellor Professor Njenga Munene revealed that the institution is set to provide business, marketing and book-keeping skills to the PLWDs to ensure that they begin, run and sustain their business enterprises successfully.

“We have joined forces with Partners for Care to empower the People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) and women through enhancing their mobility and empowering them economically. It is our responsibility to uplift their lives and support them businesswise. Disability inclusivity is crucial in ensuring maximum participation in social-economic growth in our country. These water backpacks are environmentally friendly and durable. They are unique in that they are flexible and therefore do not cause back stiffness or aches. They will ease the burden of fetching water from water points," he explained.

Zetech University is also committed to rolling out mentorship programs to students in high schools, to equip them with career guidance and prepare them as they transition to institutions of higher learning.

On his part Governor, Muthomi Njuki noted that the initiative by Zetech University was a challenge to leverage on the potential that PLWDs have in Tharaka Nithi County and Kenya at large.

“Our county government will provide the PWLDs with start-up capital to help them kick start their businesses once they complete their financial and business literacy sessions.

We will also train them on how to operate these mobility carts, to ensure that they attain the purpose intended,” he noted.

Professor Njenga Munene encouraged students intending to join institutions of higher learning to leverage on technology as they pursue their education.

“Our institution upholds innovation and technology because technology is advancing rapidly. You have to be up to speed with the latest innovations, to avoid being obsolete,” he observed.

Zetech University looks forward to more innovative and empowerment partnerships with other counties in the country and across borders.
