World record holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor are some of the top athletes confirmed for the Athletics Kenya Agnes Tirop Memorial World Cross Country Tour set for February 12 in Eldoret.

The invite-only meeting will witness 20 top female athletes and a similar number of males gather to compete.

Gidey the record holder in 10km and Kamworor a two-time world cross winner are some of the names that will grace the Gold Tour meeting.

“Based on rankings, we are in the process of sending out invitations for athletes to compete at the meeting.

We expect top athletes from around the globe to join us next month because it will be the final stop of the 14-stop tour and therefore athletes will be fighting for points and possible monetary rewards,” said Barnaba Korir, the local Organising committee CEO.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed was the chief guest during the media launch of the global event yesterday in Eldoret that was also attended by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago.

Before the launch, AK president Jack Tuwei and course director Ibrahim Hussein gave the CS a tour of the two-kilometre loop that has 60 metres of elevation, looping through grass and open woodland and passing through several challenges, including three hills, two log obstacles, two hay obstacles  and a water shade.

The course peaks as it takes the runner through a dip at  the Lobo Village, a serene resort located 8km from Eldoret town’s central business district.

Amina said this will be a promising period for Kenyan sports with the major event coming at the beginning of the year.

“Hosting this tour is a stamp of our confidence and authority in hosting major events despite being in the pandemic, hosting the events in a safe manner is something we must all be proud of,” said Amina.
