Olympic and World champion Conseslus Kipruto.

Athletics Kenya (AK) yesterday urged local athletes to be more vigilant and adhere to protocols laid down by the Ministry of Health to avoid more cases of Covid 19 infections.

The caution came a day after Olympic and World champion Conseslus Kipruto announced that he had tested positive for the virus.

“AK would like to wish a speedy recovery to the 3000m SC World and Olympic champion Conseslus Kipruto who has just tested positive for Covid 19,” read a statement from AK.

It added: “He was to travel for the Diamond League in Monaco. AK reiterates that all athletes to continue adhering to protocols stipulated in the MOH guidelines and stay safe.”

Kipruto had to give up on his bid to break the 3,000m steeplechase record at the Herculis Diamond League meeting in Monaco next week.

He was planning to attack the 7:53.63 race standard set by Kenyan-born Qatari, Saif Saeed Shaheen in Brussels in September 2004.

“Unfortunately my Covid-19 test, as part of the Monaco-protocol, came back positive and therefore I can’t be part of the Monaco Diamond League on August 14.

I don’t have any symptoms, and I was actually in great shape,” he said.
