Athletes have asked Athletics Kenya (AK) to help develop camps that will be used for training and also improve on education welfare targeting young and upcoming athletes.

This was said as more than 200 athletes aired their views on their social welfare as the nationwide AK consultative forums entered it’s second week on yesterday.

They challenged the federation to get in touch with the upcoming athletes regularly.

Emmanuel Rotich who recently graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, United States of America said that the federation is on the right track by meeting the athletes and making sure they listen to them in order to avert a crisis last month in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

According to Rotich, many athletes have been struggling to make ends meet and the only way to get out of the mess is to combine efforts and make sure upcoming athletes are being supported all round.

“We have great talents and the only way to develop them is to have more camps that will get support from the federation, county governments and national governments where education must also be factored in to make sure they go hand in hand,” said Rotich.

Rotich also said that a 24/7 hotline number should be created where an athlete can raise issues and action should be taken immediately.

“We buried Agnes Tirop recently and the issues that were raised during the burial have been implemented because it was realized that athletes are suffering and the federation is already going round taking views which should be a start of solving a lot of problems affecting us,” added Rotich.

Nathan Kipkurui former athletes said that the federation should look into the selection formula during the trials singling out the recent Masters Athletics trials held in Nyayo Stadium for the Africa Masters Championships that shall be held on November 22-27.
