Africa X-Country not AK’s priority, says coach Kirwa

Athletics Kenya (AK) are more focused on adequately preparing teams for the Africa Senior Championships and Olympics says head coach Julius Kirwa.

Kirwa was categorical that the events in Algeria and Japan in June and July respectively are of high priority as compared to Africa Cross Country Championships planned for Togo whose date nobody is sure of.

Kirwa says even if Kenya was to send a team to Togo, it will have to be a fringe side and not the main team.

“I don’t think whether the event is top on our priority list. We have two bigger ones that are of more concern to us,” Kirwa disclosed to People Sport.

His remarks come after the uncertainty over the general election in Togo forced Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Council to push back this year’s Africa Cross Country Championships by a month.

Two weeks ago, CAA made the announcement, saying the host nation will not be ready for the championships, which was due on February 28 to March 1 in Lome, Togo.

“The CAA council meeting as well as the Africa Cross-Country Championships initially scheduled for February 28 and March 1, in Lome, have been postponed to the beginning of April 2020,” said CAA president Melboume Kalkaba.

“This was at the request of the Togolese government, which have the date of its presidential elections on February 22,” he added.

With AK moving closer to the annual cross-country championships cum trials for the Africa event on February 8 in Nairobi, Kirwa says:  “Whether the event happens in Togo or not is not really our problem. My focus is we shall be properly represented at the African Championships and Olympics.”
