More countries to send advance teams for U20
World Under-20 Local Organising Committee is anticipating a number of countries to send advance teams to inspect both the competition venue at Kasarani Stadium and Athletes Village at Kenyatta University (KU) ahead of the July 7-12 event in Nairobi.
LOC deputy director of accommodation Peter Angwenyi said this after a team of German officials visited the Village at KU late last year, giving them a clean bill of health.
The visiting officials, led by National Youth coach Jorg Peter and his junior team counterpart Dietmar Chounard, settled for the same hostel their team had used during the 2017 World Under-18 Championships.
Angwenyi is hopeful more teams will be flocking to not only see Kenya’s preparedness but also book hostels for their athletes.
“Being a championships year, we are expecting more countries to send officials to inspect the village and Kasarani Stadium,” said Angwenyi.
He added: “As the LOC, we are pleased with the positive feedback we got from Germany as besides the accommodation section, they were happy with the running track, gym and other training facilities available.”
The South Nyanza Athletics Kenya boss said the high number of visitors is as a result of the anticipated over 2,000 athletes and team officials expected to grace the championships.
“Just like 2017, the only target is successfully hosting the championships and proving to the whole world that we are more than capable of staging global events,” he said.
