Two-time Olympic champion and world 800m record holder David Rudisha has refuted claims that he has retired from the track but hinted Tokyo 2020 Olympics might be his last.

Speaking to People Sport after the conclusion of the two-day trials for the World Championships on Friday, the king of the two-lap race says he will retire on his own terms.

“It’s funny because I have been reading articles that Rudisha retired. That is far from the truth. I have been concentrating on getting better from a series of injuries,” said Rudisha.

“My target is to be ready for Tokyo where I will be hoping to make it three Olympics titles,” added Rudisha, who has been out of competition for over two years.

The world record holder has a torrid time off the track. He was involved in a road accident last month, coming after his personal life was thrust back into the limelight by his estranged wife Liz Naanyu, who flagged him on social media for ‘frustrating’ her and their children.

“It’s all psychological, I want to be mentally focused for my recovery. I am glad for the progress I am making,” added the 29-year-old, while urging the country to have faith in the men’s 800m team selected for the 2019 Worlds.

“Be it the newcomer Kipngetich Ngeno, Emmanuel Korir or even Ferguson Rotich, they are strong if you ask me. There is no reason we shouldn’t be hopeful of gold from Doha,” he said.
