We’re on track, says 2020 World U20 boss Rabar

Chief Executive Officer for the 2020 World Under-20 Championships Michael Rabar has assured that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) is on track to host a successful event.

Responding to an article that appeared in the People Daily yesterday which highlighted the slow progress of preparations for the event, Rabar (pictured) put on a brave face, saying Kenya will host the championship which will be the  third major sporting event in the country since the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the 1987 All Africa Games.

Rabar, who is also chairman of Kenya Cup rugby side Menengai Cream Homeboyz, said Kenya will not risk losing the hosting rights for the July 7-12 2020 junior championships since everything is running as scheduled.

“There was no meeting planned for Tuesday since all our communication is done prior through a group email. Members know when and where our meetings happen,” said Rabar in reference to a meeting planned for Tuesday which allegedly failed to take place due to lack of quorum.

“All our previous meetings have happened without a hitch which means we are on then right track for the championships,” he added.

Rabar also differed with LOC chairman Jack Tuwei that Kenya will host another high delegation from the IAAF, now World Athletics, to inspect facilities at Kasarani Stadium and the Games Village at Kenyatta University (KU) this month.

“The next inspection tour will happen in February and not end of the month. That is the communication I have. If the officials will be coming earlier than that, then maybe it will be on other matters,” said Rabar, adding that renovations are currently going on at Kasarani and KU.

“There is nothing lagging behind, repairs and renovation works have started at the competitions facility, I want to assure the country there is no need to panic,” he said.
