Athletics Kenya (AK) will hold all the three legs of its Relay Series at the Nyayo National Stadium, saying it will be difficult to host the meets outside the capital city because of Covid-19 protocols.

Initially, Nairobi was to host the first leg on January 9, followed by the second leg in North Rift on January 23.

Kericho Green Stadium was to host the third leg on February 6 before the national trials for the World Athletics Relay Championships on March 26 and 27 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

AK  senior vice president Paul Mutwii, who doubles up as the director for competitions said, the federation is determined to follow the laid down protocols to avoid the spread of the pandemic.

“You will notice that the only thing changing is the venue and not the dates. Having the meetings in Nairobi will help limit too much traveling while trying to adhere to the rules on covid-19 containment.

Nairobi also has the best available facilities for relays,so that should be a plus for the athletes,” said Mutwii.

Mutwii added that during the first leg of the series, athletes will compete in 150m, 300m, 500m, 100m hurdles, 1,000m and 1,500m.

The 4x 200m Relay and 4 x 400m Mixed relay are the other events that will feature.

“An important take home thing for the athletes is that, the third leg will strictly be for invited athletes only. So I urge the athletes to make a case for themselves in the opening two legs,” he noted.

The World Athletics Relay Championships will be held on May 1 and 2 in Selesia, Poland where 4 x100m, 4 x200m, 4x 400m, 4x400m Mixed relays, 2x2x400m and Shuttle Relays featuring 100m hurdles for both men and women are the events that will feature.

Players who do return to their homes should not leave their homes for any reason other than to go to training and those who live with are also advised to isolate.

Clubs should arrange for groceries and other essential items to be delivered to players’ homes.

In the second phase of training, players will be divided up into groups of eight with no mixing between groups.
