Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Nairobi region competitions in handball and basketball commence today at various venues across the county as schools fight for chances to represent the region at the national games set for Kapsabet next month.

Handball regional defending champions Hospital Hill, who made their debut at the national stage, are looking to make a return. Coach Derrick Kwena has set his sights at, not just the Nairobi title, but making a debut in the East Africa games.

Kwena’s charges are in Pool A that has Utawala, Highway and Olympic. They begin their title defence against Olympic in the morning before taking on Highway in the afternoon.

Handball games are being staged at Langata High School.  As part of their preparations for this year’s school competitions, Hospital Hill participated in the 25-team Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men’s Premier League where they managed 10 wins and one draw in 22 matches.

“We joined the league to improve our tactics and techniques and gain much-needed experience especially while up against more established teams.

The players gained more confidence in the league and I expect the same to go a long way in helping us win our matches in the school competition,” said Kwena.

Pool B has Aquinas, Our Lady of Fatima, Nairobi School and Dandora. Hosts Langata are in a Pool D that also has Dagoretti and Ruaraka.

In the girls’ category, holders Dagoretti Mixed are in Pool A that has St Aloysius, High Ridge and Kamukunji.

Just like their male counterparts, Dagoretti made their debut at the national games last year but faltered as they got eliminated at the preliminary stage.

They, too, play in the KHF women’s Premier League and coach Mumo Mbeva is hopeful the experience will help in their campaign.

In girls’ basketball, national champions Buru Buru battle it out with Starehe, Dandora, Maina Wanjigi, Tumaini and State House in Pool A.

Dagoretti, national and East Africa silver medallists, are in Pool A in the boys’ category against Muhuri Muchiri, Highway, Strathmore and Eastleigh.

In rugby 15s national and East Africa silver medallists Dagoretti take on Ofafa High in one of the two semi-finals after beating Sunshine, Mutuini and Ruthimitu in the preliminary stages played earlier on before seeing off Lenana 48-0 in the quarter-final.

“Ofafa are a good and experienced side. They have good and quick players who are disciplined and we have to be ready for that match,” said Dagoretti coach Victor Walgwe.
