The University of Nairobi Dynamites in dreamland as semis loom
University of Nairobi (UoN) Dynamites came into the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League as second-place finishers in the Division One league playoffs final and set their eyes on reaching the top flight playoffs.
With one match left against Storms on Sunday, the varsity side has already qualified for the playoffs and their goals have shifted to reaching the semi-final instead.
Dynamites had a good weekend as they picked two identical wins of 62-59 against Eagle Wings and Africa Nazarene University (ANU) on Saturday and Sunday respectively to take their victories to 15 in 21 matches.
“I am very impressed by these players. They have achieved more than we had set our sights on at the beginning of the season.
We had vowed to maintain our Premier League status and, if all goes well, squeeze ourselves in the top eight but this has gone beyond that,” said an elated coach Kent Juma.
Dynamites last featured in the Premier League in the 1990s and had on and off stints in the lower league until Juma took over in 2015.
They joined the Nairobi Basketball League (NBA) in 2016 and were promoted to the KBF Division One league in 2018 where they lost in the final 3-1 to ANU.
“This season we only enlisted the services of Valary Kemunto who transferred to UoN from Kisii University. We have three players who have graduated but stuck with the team as they seek further studies and have helped the team in terms of consistency,” added Juma.
The tactician says a win against Storms in their last regular league match will be an added advantage.
