Western Secondary Schools Sports Association (WSSSA) secretary Quinto Omusugu remains optimistic with sports calendar of the institutions to resume as planned despite the current coronavirus pandemic.

Omusugu who is also national deputy secretary told People Sport it was a good move by the government to suspend learning programmes for the safety of the students, teachers and other staff members.

“We regret this outbreak of Corona-virus which has temporarily affected our regional games for term one games that were scheduled for today in St Mathias Busia County but we believe things will return to normal and we proceed with our programs.

“Let each and every one observe the laid down government guidelines and security precautions in a way of containing the scourge, we however believe that all this will come to an end in the coming few days.

“Most teams were well prepared and focusing on winning tickets for the national championship later, but we had no other option but to comply and wait for the right time after things return to normal.

“Slightly the quality of the competition will be affected since the players are not training together as a team, with most staying at home at the moment you can’t monitor them,” Omusugu said.

He however remained optimistic and prayed for the divine intervention for the swift and quick elimination of the dreaded virus.

Mukumu Boys handball coach Anthony Wekesa also raised the concerns terming the outbreak as a major threat for the sporting industry, and also regretted that it has really frustrated his program for the preparations of the regional games that were also suspended.

“My focus together with my players was to win the regional championship in Busia and proceed to the national level but the drive and the spirit of the players has been slowed down by the outbreak,” said Wekesa.
