Battle for the Kenya Cup trophy heats up with 10th round of matches played
The Kenya Cup league is taking shape after the 10th round played on Saturday when defending champions KCB redeemed themselves with a half a century win to stay on the log summit.
KCB have now amassed 33 points whereas last season’s runners-up Kabras Sugar are second on the log with 30 points after collecting their sixth straight bonus win against Menengai Oilers at the Nandi Bears Club.
KCB dismissed Mwamba 50-3 at the KCB Sports Club while Kabras neutralised the Oilers threat with a 39-8 win as Kenya Harlequin denied MMUST a win after sharing spoils in a 17-17 stalemate.
“Possession was our problem in our previous fixture and we wanted to improve and we brought in the right attitude against Mwamba with the help of a fast speed in ball recycling that earned us advantage in attack and now we start planning for MMUST,” KCB head coach Curtis Olago told People Sports.
Oilers remain third place on the standings, a point ahead of fourth placed Strathmore Leos who whitewashed Nakuru RFC 44-5 for the right to displace Impala who now drop to sit fifth.
Nondescripts were the biggest climbers of the round courtesy of a 34-13 win against Blak Blad that catapulted the Red Lion four places from bottom to seventh where they are tied with eighth placed Nakuru. MMUST are ninth.
“We could have conceded more but our defense did a commendable job though we still have a few concerns and we want to improve on our set pieces. In set pieces we struggled a bit and we have to make it right before we meet Mwamba next,” Nondies coach Foxy Ojall told People Sport.
Blak Blad coach Williams Motto hopes to work on their execution ahead of their first meeting with MMUST in their next fixture on July 31st in Kakamega.
“We were superior in the setpieces, but the scores did not reflect on full time.
We picked the positives for the MMUST match in two week’s time,”said Motto.
