Gor Mahia picked up a vital 1-0 win over Tusker in a tight Football Kenya Federation Premier League match that was played at Moi International Sports Complex on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

The Brewers' loss puts more pressure on head coach Robert Matano, who has witnessed his side struggle in the first seven games of the season. The latest loss means that the Ruaraka club has ceded more ground in the title race, with Gor Mahia looking solid in their title defence campaign so far.

Benson Omala scored the all-important goal for K'Ogalo and consequently took his tally to seven goals. The former Kisumu Day star, who missed the Golden Boot award last season by a whisker, is in good form, and his goal against Tusker comes after he had two against AFC Leopards before the international break.

Omala's goal

Omala scored the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute, and Tusker did not equalize to deny the reigning Premier League champions another win.

The goal was scored after a superb team buildup that saw a final pass delivered into the box where Omala was, and the centre forward did well to find the back of the net.

Kevin Omondi, in Gor Mahia's goal, made a vital save to deny Tusker's James Kibande a goal in the 23rd minute. Since the game started, Tusker were dominant but failed to make their chances count.

Emery Bayisenge was injured, and head coach Johnathan McKinstry made an early change as he brought on Joshua Onyango in place of the injured defender.

Tusker continued looking for an equalizer, but their efforts did not bear fruit, especially after Shaphan Siwa and Ibrahim Joshua failed to make maximum use of their chances.

McKinstry made more changes with the introduction of Ernest Wendo, who came on for Austin Odhiambo, and Boniface Omondi, who replaced Kevin Simiyu.

Tusker kept their search for a goal going until late in the second half but again were unable to turn their chances into goals, with Eric Zakayo wasting the most open opportunity.

The win means Gor Mahia - who remain second on the table with 15 points - have closed in on Posta Rangers as only one point separates them. Rangers were defeated on Saturday, October 21, by Talanta, as the Mailmen tasted defeat for the first time this season.

As the champions savor their hard-fought win, eyes are now on Tusker to see whether they will sack coach Matano following the loss to their recent closest rivals.
