Butali, Telkom retain respective KHU titles

Butali Sugar Warriors and Telkom respectively retained their men’s and women’s Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier league titles over the weekend at the City Park Stadium.

Butali defeated second-placed Wazalendo 2-0 to move to 42 points unassailable lead with two games to spare.

Telkom who will rebrand to Blazers at the end of the season had the better of Kenyatta University Titans who they beat 2-1 for a record 22nd title.

Third-placed Kenya Police can still take second place after beating bottom placed Parklands and closing on Wazalendo on 33 points.

In the women’s premier league Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology JKUAT finally registered a maiden win after beating former champions Sliders 1-0. Sliders lost again 2-1 to Strathmore University Scorpions on Sunday.

Denis Owaka’s Butali needed the goals from veteran Zack Aura who scored in the second quarter from a short corner.

Francis Kariuki ensured the points and trophy after also scoring from a short corner late in the fourth quarter.

Owaka gave credit to his side for a brave show in a competitive season. They have registered 13 wins three draws from the last 16 matches.

“It’s definitely massive for the team. Wazalendo and all the teams have had a good season.
