Kenyan referee Peter Kamaku has been picked by CAF to officiate at the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) to be held in Algeria next month.

This is Kenya’s first foray in more than a year into international assignments following the recent lifting of the football sanctions by FIFA after interventions by Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

Kamaku, a FIFA referee, and all other Kenyan officials were not considered for World Cup Qatar 2022 because of Kenya’s suspension by FIFA.

He has been named as a VAR (Video Assistant Referee) official for the tournament.

Kamaku said the appointment came as a blessing.“It is a favour from above. This is good news for me; Africa is big and wide so it’s an honour to be chosen. It’s a chance to grow my career and it’s also good news for the country as well. Hopefully, this will help inspire young people to become referees.”

Kamaku who is a mathematics lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), thanked the government for restoring Kenya to the international football fold.

He was initially set to feature at the ongoing Fifa World Cup in Qatar together with Assistant Referee Gilbert Cheruiyot, but missed the opportunity due to the lengthy sanctions on the country.

“I thank the government for helping to lift the FIFA suspension. This is a direct result of that action. It means Kenyan officials can now be selected for CAF and FIFA duty again.”
