Cape Verde made history by becoming the first team to secure a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout phase after a convincing 3-0 victory over Mozambique.

The Blue Sharks, coming off a surprising opening win against Ghana, displayed impressive early exchanges in the tournament.

Cape Verde dominance

Cape Verde's dominance was evident from the start, with Deroy Duarte forcing a spectacular save from Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan Siluane.

Duarte's diving header narrowly missed a post, showcasing Cape Verde's attacking prowess. Bebe, the former Manchester United striker, unleashed a powerful 30-yard free-kick that hit the crossbar, but he later found the net with a remarkable long-distance shot.

Despite a tame effort from Mozambique's Witi, Cape Verde maintained control. The Mambas were seemingly granted a lifeline when a penalty was initially awarded, but VAR intervention reversed the decision, preserving Cape Verde's lead.

Ryan Mendes extended the Blue Sharks' advantage in the 51st minute, capitalizing on a defensive error and slotting home from the edge of the box.

Cape Verde seal

Mozambique's attempts to stage a comeback fell short, with Geny Catamo's curling free-kick hitting the crossbar as their best chance.

Ryan Mendes sealed Cape Verde's commanding performance with a powerful 25-yard drive, securing his 17th international goal and confirming their place in the knockout phase.

The Blue Sharks will now face Egypt in their upcoming match, while Mozambique looks to bounce back against Ghana.
