Anthony Kimani, a midfielder at Nairobi City Stars, has officially retired from professional football following the conclusion of the 2022/23 FKF Premier League season

Kimani's retirement was marked during the season-ending match against Gor Mahia, where he came off the bench in the 81st minute to replace goal scorer Samuel Kapen.

Anthony Kimani chapter

Although Gor Mahia emerged victorious with a 4-1 win and were crowned champions, it was a bittersweet moment as Kimani closed a chapter in his football journey.

The 284-match veteran was honoured by Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir, who presented him with a special jersey bearing the number 284 and his name.

Kimani's football journey began in his hometown of Riruta on the outskirts of Nairobi, where he was inspired by his elder sibling, Francis Thairu, to pursue the sport.

Kimani started his football career at Dagoretti Santos before joining World Hope, later renamed Nairobi City Stars, in 2009.

While he briefly signed with Sofapaka that same year, Kimani returned to City Stars to gain regular playing time, citing the need for further maturity before competing with more seasoned players.

Anthony Kimani awards

Returning to Sofapaka in 2010, Kimani's exceptional performances earned him the title of Kenyan Premier League midfielder of the year.

He continued his tenure at Sofapaka for three seasons, during which he also received the GOtv Shield midfielder award in 2013.

Following his time at Sofapaka, Kimani joined Bandari for two seasons before taking a break from professional football due to work commitments.

He made a triumphant comeback after two and a half years, rejoining Nairobi City Stars for the 2019 season.

His dedication and contribution to the club extended beyond the promotion to the Kenyan Premier League, as he remained with the team for two more seasons.

National Team

Throughout his career, Kimani's skills and talents also earned him international recognition. He made his debut for the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars, in 2010 under coach Jacob Mulee.

Representing Kenya in the 2010 and 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cups, Kimani amassed a total of ten caps for his country.

As a testament to his commitment to the sport, Kimani recently acquired his CAF 'D' License Coaching Diploma certificate.

After sustaining an injury during a premier league game against Mathare United, he successfully completed the ten-day course during his stay on the sidelines.

Kimani's pursuit of coaching credentials followed in the footsteps of fellow Nairobi City Stars stalwart Peter Pinchez Opiyo, who obtained a similar certification in January.
