Stakeholders offer varied reactions on draft constitution
Barely 48 hours after the Cricket Kenya draft constitution was released to the public and subsequently recalled, more questions than answers are unfolding.
Already voices of discord have emerged regarding the process and its end game.
It is now emerging that certain interests are being advanced for particular individuals to get seats at the Board of the age-old organisation lately fraught with drama.
The document was meant to bring about sober and honest discussions of status of cricket going forward. However, the view of some insiders is the very opposite.
A source close to the workings and creation of the document intimates that even the Board is split down the middle especially on the clauses of elections and membership.
The source claimed that key individuals were pushing for some amendment to the draft even before the document is formally discussed and ratified.
“What we are witnessing is greed from the top and it is because some of us want permanent residence at the office.
I am privy to information that some members in the Board want bigger roles when Elections are called so that they continue to have influence from within.
This is unacceptable and ideally the concern should be how to drive the agenda of the sport.
We have invested a lot of time and resources on experts who collected proposals all over beforehand.
The Board itself is split down the middle on this matter,” said the insider who spoke on condition of anonymity.
On March 29, a communiqué went out from Advocate Samuel Muthomi; Chairperson Cricket Kenya Constitution Review Committee to members of CK asking for reviews and comments of the Draft.
It was meant to create a discussion on a clearer path on rebuilding the sport. The statement read in part.
“The main mandate of my Committee was to align the draft constitution with the provisions of the Sports Act No. 25 of 2013 and the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 and ensure that we have a good foundation for the proper governance and development of the game of Cricket in Kenya.
This requires simpler governance structures, ease of access to membership, diversity in representation, equal sharing of resources and more transparency and accountability.
It is important that as many of your voices are heard and your views be considered as we wrap up this long-standing matter and finalise the draft. Please note to indicate what areas need fine-tuning, your proposed reasons for proposing such changes.”
The recall of the document by CK office has been dubbed mischievous and strange even as key members Jackie Janmohammed and Tom Tikolo remained cagey on the issue.
