Kenya Sevens suffered the third straight defeat with their journey in the Commonwealth Games ending with a 22-12 loss to Scotland in the fifth place semi-final played on Sunday 31st July 2022.

Kenya went to this match after struggling in the previous two matches, losing to Australia and New Zealand (in the Quarters). They had lost 7-5 to Australia and had been defeated 31-0 by New Zealand in the quarter-finals.

Kenya Sevens concede twice

Just like the match against New Zealand, Shujaa found themselves down at halftime after conceding two tries. The first try of the match came in the fourth minute and it was from, Jordan Edmunds with Kaleem Baretto missing the target with his conversion attempt.

The Scotts doubled the lead through Baretto who touched down after several phases from his side. The try also went unconverted with the side taking a 10-0 lead to the break

Kenya came back stronger from the break and individual brilliance from captain Nelson Oyoo saw him score and helped the side trim the gap to five points. Tony Omondi failed to get the conversion right with the scoreboard changing to 10-5 in favour of Scotland.

Kenya Sevens comeback

Kenya struck again through Daniel Taabu after reacting quickly to a loose ball, sneaking through a gap and raced to the score under the posts. He converted for a 12-10.

Scotland then fought back to reclaim the lead and scored after a well-worked response, their phase play set up Harvey Elms for a try just before the buzzer sounded.

Ross McCann finished off with a try at the death. With the loss, Shujaa now shifts to the Rugby World Cup 7s in Cape Town, South Africa from 9th to 12th September 2022 and the final leg of the World Sevens Series.
